Going Inside Round Island Lighthouse!

Okay, I'm pretty sure this was one of the coolest days of the summer! At least, so far. :) I got to take a fishing charter boat from Mackinac Island, and then transfer to a little zodiac in the harsh-ish waves (getting a bit soaked in the process). It was a wee bit scary but so completely fun!

Every year since 2007, the Round Island Lighthouse Preservation Society and Boy Scout troop 323 of Freeland, Michigan hold an Open House the weekend following July 4th. The Scouts took us on a guided tour of the lighthouse and gave us all the history we could want! It was very awesome. The views from the top/each floor were so great! I took a ridiculous amount of pictures. I may be a bit biased, but they're all amazing. (; I included some of my favorites, so enjoy! Until you can get up here for yourself. One of the coolest things that happened this day was being able to talk to a woman who was the daughter of one of the last lighthouse keepers! She grew up in the lighthouse and got to have all of Round Island to herself (and her family of course). She told us stories and gave us a little mini tour telling where she lived and how their days were. She was in her 90s and still pretty agile! There's definitely something about a Northern Michigan Island lifestyle that's good for the body and soul!

So incredibly cool. I'd been wanting to do this for years.
So excited!

Gives a new meaning to the phrase window frame, eh? (Sorry, terrible joke)

I love natural frames.

That water is just so beautiful!

Me with the island in the background!

The view from the top was so amazing.

Being on top is pretty great. ;)

I know this is a weird one; I'm still not quite sure how it happened, but I'm kinda loving the weird effect it has.

I'm at the tippy top! The one in white by the flag pole.

What a Fruitful Day!

It's that time of year again! The sun is very hot, and raspberries are in bloom! Or fruiting? Or bearing fruit? I'm not quite sure the proper term for it. I love biking home from town and finding raspberry patches all over the island. It's always a good break when going up a tough hill. ;) I can't wait to make popsicles! Or pie, jam or anything tasty! Or I might just eat all of them before they can be made into anything else. That option may actually win out.

Also, sorry it's been so long since my last post. Summer on Mackinac has been crazy busy! I'll share all my adventures soon. :)
